Buy Local with Local Dirt

Did you know that, on average, food travels a whopping 1500 miles from the farm to your plate? Grocers and restaurants currently buy less than two percent of their produce and meat from local farmers, but DEMO startup Local Dirt is looking to boost local consumption.

Local Dirt has essentially created an online marketplace making it easy for everyone - from families to schools, restaurants and grocery stores - to find and purchase fresh, locally grown food, baked goods and more. Products can be searched by type, quantity, distance, and delivery method.

The site aims to support sustainable farming practices, shorten the distance food travels, increase the freshness of produce available to consumers, and boost the local economy. Local Dirt is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
