LA Twestival Brings Twitter Users Together for Charity
Arts & Entertainment

Guest Post by Erin A. Darling from The Pop Fix

LA’s Twestival took place last Sunday night to a mixed crowd of techies, social butterflies and, of course, people scrambling for free drink tickets. A large crowd of Twitter users (or, Tweeple, as some like to say) converged at Level 3 at Hollywood & Highland in hopes of going from virtual friends to real friends. Although the loud music was not exactly conducive to meeting new people, the energy and excitement overpowered the raucous, thumping beats.

Unlike the name would suggest, LA Twestival wasn’t exactly a festival. It was more like a party where the money you spend actually benefits two good, local causes: Chrysalis and LA Regional Food Bank. Both organizations had tents and representatives present to create awareness in the local community.

Everywhere from the bar to the VIP lounge was filled with interesting people involved in different forms of media, online communities and social networking including Chelsea Lately panelist Ben Gleib, artist Natasha Westcoat, and even viral video phenom Tay Zonday. You may not know his name, but I bet you’ve heard his song “Chocolate Rain,” which has racked up 41,000,000 youtube views.

In between the mingling and the networking came the entertainment. LA Twestival was hosted by the Emmy-award winning Good Day LA reporter, Suzanne Marquez who introduced comedy and music acts to the crowd. During their Techzulu interview, comedians Ben Gleib and Ben Morrison told us that the Twestival crowd (who seemed more interested in listening to each other, as opposed to the comedy) was a tough audience.  However, Dr. Hollywood (the duo behind local radio hit “We Run LA”) had no problem entertaining the masses, inspiring people to get out on the dance floor during their short performance.

Although it was an event produced by volunteers under a limited timescale, Twestival was able to lock down a great venue, attract talented performers and also succeeded in its goal to bring people together for a good cause. All attendees we interviewed told us they were enjoying the event, except maybe the comedians…
